What it is
The EU Artificial Intelligence Act
The EU AI Act is a regulation by the European Union that establishes a legal framework for the development, deployment, and use of artificial intelligence systems. It takes a risk-based approach, with stricter rules for higher-risk applications.
Like GDPR, it has extraterritorial reach: if your AI system affects people in the EU, the regulation applies regardless of where your company is headquartered.
Risk classification
Unacceptable risk (Banned)
Social scoring, real-time biometric surveillance, manipulation of vulnerable groups.
High risk
AI in HR recruitment, credit scoring, law enforcement, critical infrastructure, education.
Limited risk
Chatbots, AI-generated content, emotion recognition. Requires transparency notices.
Minimal risk
Spam filters, AI-enabled games, inventory management. No additional obligations.

FAQ
Common questions about the EU AI Act
What is the EU AI Act?
The EU AI Act is the world's first comprehensive legal framework for artificial intelligence. It classifies AI systems by risk level and imposes obligations ranging from transparency requirements for low-risk systems to strict conformity assessments for high-risk ones.
When does the EU AI Act take effect?
The regulation entered into force in August 2024 with a phased implementation. Prohibitions on unacceptable-risk AI apply from February 2025, transparency obligations from August 2025, and requirements for high-risk systems from August 2026.
Does the EU AI Act apply to my company?
If you develop, deploy, or distribute AI systems in the EU market, or if your AI systems affect people in the EU, the Act likely applies to you, regardless of where your company is based.
What are the risk categories?
The Act defines four risk levels: Unacceptable (banned, e.g. social scoring), High (strict requirements, e.g. HR screening, credit scoring), Limited (transparency obligations, e.g. chatbots), and Minimal (no obligations, e.g. spam filters).
What are the fines for non-compliance?
Fines can reach up to €35 million or 7% of global annual turnover for the most serious violations, such as deploying prohibited AI practices. Other violations carry fines up to €15 million or 3% of turnover.
How does ISO 42001 relate to the EU AI Act?
ISO 42001 is the international standard for AI management systems. Implementing ISO 42001 helps demonstrate compliance with many EU AI Act requirements, particularly around governance, risk management, and documentation for high-risk AI systems.
